Youth at Risk

Youth at Risk benefit from experiences which enable them to form a different world view that enriches their understanding of themselves and their community. Students come to realize that they have the potential to succeed and the responsibility to make use of their gifts. They also learn how to listen, respect and value others, and respond to challenges as part of a team.

Adventures in nature provide a safe, healthy environment that enables young people to discover their fullest potential. Respectful communication and coping skills are learned through exhilarating life changing adventures at our eco-campus, on the edge of Algonquin Park.

What matters?

Living in the moment; caring for self and others; making new friends. In learning valuable life skills, participants gain a deep appreciation of the interconnectedness of all living things. At Northern Edge Algonquin, young people are challenged to discover and harness their potential through experiences that push them beyond their comfort zones, turning challenges into opportunities.

Youth on experiential education experiences at the Edge overcome their Nature Deficit Disorder, a term coined by Richard Louv in his 2005 book Last Child in the Woods. Louv challenges educators to consider that children who spend less time outdoors, exploring natural areas and more time in front of screens and pre-destined to display a wide range of behavioural problems including attention-deficit disorder. With the average youth spending 44 hours with electronic media, it's time youth spent some time off trail.

Participants in wilderness adventures get the perspective they crave to apply their leadership skills, creative thinking, passion, and determination to chart a course for success within their homes, schools, and communities. Expeditions gently push participants into the realm of exploring the edges of their comfort zones where they discover treasures within. Participants discover healthy risk taking, teamwork, and self-reliance in Algonquin Park, a world renowned natural setting.
