Environment Career Advice
First Aid Training is something that you can do right now to jump start your career path. These certifications are required in most jobs working in the outdoors. Consider an advanced wilderness first aid course. A few places that host first aid courses include: St Johns Ambulance, The Red Cross, Wilderness Medical Associates of Canada and the Life Saving Society.
If you want to work around water, whether it is as a fisheries biologist or a white water rafting guide, get your Bronze Cross or NLS in swimming and your Boat License. Consider getting your class F drivers license too so you can drive up to 24 passenger vehicles, including 9-12 seat vans for getting to remote locations. If you are qualified, it definately will give you a leg up.
Get volunteer experience in the outdoors and join clubs and organized activities. This is one of the best things you can do to get a head of the game. It will teach you more about what you enjoy and what you don't and it shows employers that you are outgoing and ambitious. You could even ask to volunteer for a day with an outdoor focused organization. Being an unpaid intern can give you a good look at what your career in the environment could be.
Chat with your guidance counsellor at school and people who already work in the fields you are interested in about different career paths and education.
